Visit to Canada of General Jean-Louis Georgelin
Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honour, Chancellor of the National Order of Merit
General Jean-Louis Georgelin, Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honour and Chancellor of the National Order of Merit, will visit Canada from November 6th to November 10th.
The National Order of the Legion of Honour and the National Order of Merit represent, respectively, the highest and second-highest French national orders. The Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honour, Chancellor of the National Order of Merit, under the authority of the Grand Master (the President of the Republic), is responsible for the overseeing the activities of the Order’s grand council and its administrative services.
The Grand Chancellor will first visit Ottawa, where he will present awards to three people:
Monsignor Mauricio Bravi, Counsellor to the Apostolic Nunciature in Ottawa, who will be appointed to the rank of Officer of the National Order of the Legion of Honour, an award that underscores the remarkable contributions that he made during his time with the Apostolic Nunciature in Paris to strengthen the relationship between France and the Holy See.
Professor Benoît Pelletier, lawyer, former member of the National Assembly of Quebec, former minister with the Quebec government, who worked tirelessly to preserve the friendship between France and Canada and to build a better understanding between the two countries. One particular example is his contribution to the creation of the Centre de la Francophonie des Amériques. Professor Pelletier will be awarded the rank of Chevalier of the National Order of Merit.
Mrs. Marie-Claude Auradou, Commercial Attachée of the Embassy of France in Ottawa, who has worked to strengthen the economic relations between France and such other countries as Canada and the United States. Mrs. Auradou will also be awarded the rank of Chevalier of the National Order of Merit.
The Grand Chancellor will then travel to Toronto, where he will appoint Mrs. Helen Vari to the rank of Officer of the National Order of the Legion of Honour. Mrs. Vari, great philanthropist, founder and President of the French section of the World Monuments Fund, has been particularly active in the promotion of friendship between France and Canada and of the French language and culture in Canada. This ceremony will also an be an occasion to celebrate the memory of the Honourable George William Vari, P.C., C.M., Canadian civil engineer and economist, and founder, with his wife Helen, of the George and Helen Vari Foundation. Mr. Vari was an Officer of the Legion of the Honour.
Following his visit to Toronto, General Jean-Louis Georgelin will go to Quebec, where he will appoint Mr. Jean-Robert Zonda to the rank of Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in recognition of his remarkable career, expertise, and contributions to the development of cooperation between France and Quebec.
The Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honour will end his visit to Canada in Montreal where, as he had done in the three previous cities, he will meet with local members of the Society of Members of the Legion of Honour.
