The Sahel Alliance: taking daily action for the Sahel [fr]
The efforts underway to achieve security in the Sahel region will be short-lived unless they go hand-in-hand with long-term development work. To stabilize the region and prevent violent radicalization, it is crucial to create the conditions for economic development with the potential to generate jobs, especially given the growing number of young people.
These goals require greater efforts to boost development in the region.
On 4 April 2022, the 3rd General Assembly of the Sahel Alliance will be held in Madrid under the Spanish Presidency. This will be an opportunity to make the voice of solidarity heard and to debate future action.
The young people of the Sahel possess the potential and energy which is essential to building a better future, which is why these young people, along with the need to maintain and step up development projects for people in the Sahel, will be at the forefront of our discussions.

The Sahel Alliance is an international coordination platform for stability and development in G5 Sahel countries: Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad.
It is a French-German initiative, launched in Paris in 2017 in the presence of President Macron, Chancellor Angela Merkel and the High Representative of the European Union, Federica Mogherini.
The Alliance is neither a new structure nor a forum for financial advocacy, but rather a mechanism for improving the coordination of partners to deliver faster, more effective and better-targeted assistance to vulnerable areas. Its aim is to fight against the root causes of the Sahel crisis by avoiding fragmented assistance and speeding up its deployment. In collaboration with the G5 Sahel, it is thus contributing to the Sahel Coalition’s development pillar.
The Sahel Alliance brings together the main multilateral and bilateral development partners of the Sahel States.
The Alliance currently has 26 members:
France, Germany, the European Union, the African Development Bank, the United Nations Development Programme, the World Bank, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Luxembourg, Denmark, the Netherlands, the European Investment Bank, the United States, Canada and Norway are full members.
Japan, Belgium, Switzerland, Finland, Ireland, the International Finance Corporation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, and the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) are observer members.
The technical and financial partners within the Sahel Alliance are funding over 1,000 labelled projects in G5 Sahel countries, worth a total of €22 billion.
It has six key priorities:
- youth employability, education and training,
- agriculture, rural development and food security,
- energy and climate,
- governance,
- decentralization and support for rolling out basic services,
- internal security.
France is playing a key role in these efforts to develop the Sahel.
