Renaud Garcia-Fons Trio at the Ottawa International Jazz Festival
French double bass player Renaud Garcia-Fons will thrill music lovers on Monday, June 23 at 5:00pm at Library and Archives Canada for a special Ottawa International Jazz Festival concert.
Renaud Garcia-Fons was born not far from Paris in 1962. At age five he started music with piano and classical guitar. At 16, he took up the double bass. He studied classical repertoire and technique at the conservatory while taking private lessons with François Rabbath, who brought him a deeper knowledge of the instrument. Renaud Garcia Fons’ taste for exploration and openness soon took him beyond the instrument’s technical limitations as he added a fifth string to his double bass.
Improvisation is paramount for Renaud Garcia-Fons as it provides him with the spiritual dimension that motivates his passion for this art. His musical inspiration springs from several sources. On the one hand he feels close to the flamenco tradition, which he studied and adapted to the bass, but he also delves passionately into Mediterranean and oriental music.
During the Ottawa International Jazz Festival Renaud Garcia-Fons will bring you to the crossroads of jazz and traditional flamenco. His fluid compositions and pristine bowed melodies will leave a lot of room to creative improvisations.
Renaud Garcia-Fons will be playing with:
Kiko Ruiz, flamenca guitar
Pascal Rollando, Cajon and latin percussions
