Disappearance of Robert Fowler

Disappearance of Robert Fowler in Niger (December 16, 2008)

- Statement by the presidency of the Council of the European Union

The Presidency of the Council of the European Union has been informed of the disappearance of Robert Fowler, the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Niger, who was accompanied by his Canadian assistant and their Nigerian chauffeur.

If the abduction of Mr Fowler and his colleagues, for which the Front des Forces de Redressement has claimed responsibility, is confirmed, the Presidency condemns this act in the strongest terms and demands the immediate release of these people who were carrying out a mission on behalf of the United Nations.

The Presidency of the Council of the European Union assures the Canadian government and the United Nations Secretary General of its support and requests that everything be done to find Mr Fowler and his colleagues.
