Under the Ambassador’s authority, the Defence Attaché answers to the Ministry of Armed Forces and, as such, acts as representative of the Ministry’s various authorities in Canada. The Defence Attaché is Head of the Defence Mission.

The Defence Mission in Canada contributes to the preservation, development and promotion of France’s defence interests, with local authorities as well as local representatives of foreign countries and organizations. As a general rule, it covers the three main areas of defence, which are:

 National defence policy
 Military cooperation
 Arms relations
