Air-Ticket Solidarity Contribution
On February 28th and March 1st, 2006, under the patronage of the President of the Republic, Mr. Jacques Chirac, France hosted the Conference on Innovative Development Financing Mechanisms. Its goal will be to remedy the reoccurring financial and international aid problems, notably concerning the fight against pandemics such as AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.
France proposes a air-ticket solidarity contribution. A law, voted on by the French parliament, anticipates this
contribution to come into effect on French soil as of July 1st, 2006. This contribution will raise 200 million euros per year in France alone.
The intention expressed by Brazil, Chile, Congo, Cyprus, Ivory Coast, France, Jordan, Luxemburg, Madagascar, Mauritius, Nicaragua and Norway to implement the international air-ticket solidarity contribution was welcomed. Other countries are set to follow suit.
